I decided to not be bound by painting them in plein air, which has been a good thing for many reasons. Weather, and traffic...inevitably someone will park right in front of my subject just as I am getting started on my painting. I am thankful that I am also using other reference material as well; sketches, plein air studies, and photographs.
I am painting the churches seasonally, so thus far I have some summer, fall , and now winter paintings. It is so much fun to paint them...the light and reflections are amazing when you really look at them I would also like to paint them at different times of the day and in different weather conditions...
Doing a series does challenge me...I picked architecture, which I ordinarily don't paint, and that alone is a learning process for me.
Here are two paintings from the series:
"Fleeting Light", oil, 12"x9" ( Left)
"Summer Shadows", 18"x14", oil ( lower left)
Same subject, and totally different paintings...the painting is of Father Dyer Methodist Church here in Breckenridge.
This is a difficult church to paint...the building is situated on a corner that is
busy and there are other buildings close by so it is hard to get a good view.
I often set up on the opposite corner and deal with traffic and passerbys.
All of the paintings I have completed thus far are at Breckenridge Art Gallery.
