I have been teaching an introduction to oil painting class in the Breckenridge, CO Arts District. I show my students how to use a limited palette for several reasons: #1 Cost, #2 Color Harmony, and #3 Understanding color nuances.
It is exciting to see students learning to mix color as well as to see color in their subject matter. Artists all have their personal favorite palettes.
Here is my basic one: Titanium white, lemon yellow, cadmium yellow light, cadmium red light, alizarin crimson, ultramarine blue. Optional: cobalt blue. I do not use any "hue" pigments. With a few brushes, canvas, and odorless mineral spirits you are ready to paint!
