Paint Out Planning

Participating in a paint out requires some planning in order to have a good experience. This is especially important if you are traveling a long distance and have to fly.

I recently flew to NC to participate in an invitational paint out. I have found that it is less stressful to ship my equipment in advance. I am fortunate that one of my art buddies graciously allows me to ship my boxes to her. TIP#1: Have someone willing to receive your art supplies.

I ship my paints, tripod, pochade, brushes, hat, extra clothing, backpack, sketchpad, pencils, brush cleaner, and medium cups. The only thing I don't ship is the solvent and paper towels.

I watch the weather channel and other internet weather sites such as Accuweather religously so that I can pack appropriate clothing, although many times the weather has fooled me. I pack as light as possible.

Hopefully your friend can supply you with your solvent and other items such as bug spray and paper towels when you arrive. Otherwise you should research where to purchase these necessary items and allow time for that.

Timing is important. You need to figure out travel time to your paint out as well as allowing time to get supplies if necessary.

If all goes well, you arrive at your destination and are greeted by your art buddies who have your gear, supplies, and wine in hand. Now you are ready to paint?

More to follow!
