Giving Paintings for Christmas

"Dusk", 6"x8", oil

When I owned a gallery ( a long time ago) I found that some clients had trouble deciding if they should give a painting as a gift. They weren't sure of the tastes of their friends...some weren't sure of their own tastes. I always was happy to try to help...but art is a personal thing, and unless you are sure of your friend's tastes, then it is truly risky. Most galleries are happy to give a credit if the recipient isn't happy with their gift. Before deciding on a painting try to remember the style of art that your friend has in their home or office...it also helps to think about places or subjects that are special to them. Maybe they love a particular artist's work already...that helps... Size can be a factor too...small pieces can find a place just about anywhere. If you are really sneaky you can plan a visit to a gallery together and see which pieces they like. There are lots of openings and special shows in December...Above all, deal with a reputable gallery or artist. Giving a work of art will be something that your friend will treasure. I still love the pieces that my husband and I have given to each other over the years.
