Taos- Plein Air Painting

I just returned earlier this week from Taos, where I participated in the annual Plein Air Artists of Colorado (PAAC) Paint Out. It was coordinated by Patrice Walker and Leslie Allen, both PAAC members. The annual event also includes members of the New Mexico Plein Air group.Taos is always a special place for me. I love the quaint adobes steeped in history, the landscape, art, and of course the food.

I decided to challenge myself by painting adobes every day.It was nice not to have to worry about doing paintings for anything special, so it was a good time to do this challenge.I also had decided to paint 11x14" and larger.. Tricia Bass painting our challenge below.
My friend Tricia Bass was game for this challenge too. It was a real challenge. The adobe reflects all kinds of light and has soft edges as well as curved areas. Sometimes there was only a slight variation in value. The weather decided to play a part in this challenge as well by providing changes in the skies.

We were both frustrated as well as amazed at what we discovered as we painted each day. Our artist eyes were constantly bombarded with surprising information.
Left: Painting at the Mabel Dodge Luhan Home.
I was constantly dealing with changing light, so I resisted the temptation to change my original idea.
Finished painting: oil, 11"x14".
